1. Why does nobody like Linda?
Linda used to be apart of this society and was very well conditioned. No one seems to like her anymore. The reason for this is because she appeared ugly to others. "poor Linda - there was her appearance. Fat; having lost her youth; with bad teeth, and a blotched complexion, and that figure (Ford!) - you simply couldn't look atr her without feeling sick..." (Huxley 160) The one and only reason Linda was ignored and disliked by the society was becuase of her looks. For the most part she acted the same as everyone else. For example Huxley shows Linda telling Lenina all about how horrible the savage society is v.s the civilized society including how dreadful it is that everything is dirty, and how illogical it is that people mend all of their clothes. (129-130) What Linda groaned about matches up with the beliefs of the women of the conditioned society so the only reason they dislike her is because of her appearance.
2. Are there any harmful effects of Soma?
There is evidence for only one physically harmful thing Soma can do to somebody. As Dr. Shaw pointed out, "One day the respiratory centre will be paralyzed. No more breathing." (Huxley 161) Dr. Shaw was talking about Linda, who was taking too much Soma a day, so apparently the only physically harmful effect is over-dosing and being un-able to breathe. However, there is possibly another harmful effect of Soma. Soma could cause one to miss out in important daily activities that could cause people to get mad and shun someone. For example, Dr. Shaw states that, "you can't allow people to go popping off into eternity[popping Soma] if they've got any serious work to do." (Huxley 161) So if a citizen irresponsibly took Soma at the wrong time, and missed important buissness, there is a strong possibility that chaos would occur, and an even stronger possibility that that citizen would be hated or released.
3. Why does Lenina like John?
The main reason Lenina likes John is shallow. Lenina only likes John for his looks. Lenina states many times how good looking he is. "He's terribly good-looking." (Huxley 172). “Lenina was smiling at him; such a nice-looking boy, she was thinking, and a really beautiful body” (Huxley 126). There is no evidencce in the book for any other reason for Lenina's intrest in John.

Brave New World Response: 1
Equality in Brave New World is created in certain social groups. The equality in each social group is created by what everyone wheres and how they act. Everyone in a certain social group has the same clothes, and has been taught and educated the same way. This creates an equality between everyone in the group. At the same time however, they have been conditioned and taught that they are better than the other groups. For example, Lenina routinley states while having a casual conversation that, "I'm glad I'm not an Epsilon." (Huxley 85) this phrase has been repeated in her ear every night and now she just thinks it to be normal. This reduces conflict because it makes Lenina not want to interact with the Epsilons and it makes her not jealous either, and vice versa, Epsilons have been conditioned to think that way about Betas, and other groups. Also, since every body is taught the same ways since a little kid, there is no conflict because there are no clashing ideas in this society. Happiness has been created much like how conflict has been reduced between groups. They have been taught that they 'are happy' by conditioning them and whispering it to them at night. For example, Lenina echoes that everbody is happy now, and later in the paraagraph it explains how they have heard the words repeated a hundred and fifty times every night for twelve years (Huxley 86). By telling people that they are really happy, they start to believe it. This society is a dystopia because the society is brainwashed and imposed to do all these things like have sex, where certain clothes, and force themselves to believe they are happy. Since they have no freedom of will and must follow all orders from the government, this society becomes a facist and fake society.

Othering all day
1. The west views the east as facinating and homogeneous. The west believes the east to be non-individuals and depend on their group.
2. It means that their actions are determined by instinctive emotions rather than by concious choices or decisions.
3. Their emotions and reactions are always determined by ratial considerations and their actions are determined by instinctive emotions.
4. It benefits the west because it raises our self-esteem and creates a political capital. A common enemy can benefit a group of people because it unites the mass and they have a connection.
5. This view of the east still exists because the west is more cultured and richer. The west still considers the east as primitive just because they lack resources that we have, and we in turn persecute them for it.

Final 1984 Journal
The ending of 1984 is unexpected. Winston submits to Big Brother and 'loves' him. Orwell states that for Winston, "Everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother." (245) Big Brother, in the final line of the book, has won. He has defeated Winston by penatrating his logical thoughts and taking control of him. One possible way the state could be brought down is by the Proles. The Proles aren't as controlled by the government and have more humanistic qualitys. For example, Winston explains how, "If there is hope, it lies in the Proles” (Orwell 60.) The Prole's could take over the state because they took up most of the society, over 80 percent, and until the state see's them as a threat, they have more freedom than other members of the society. At the end of the novel, Winston probably starts to live a common life for a party member, dedicated and loving towards Big Brother. He has convinced himself that his logic is incorrect, and Big Brother's is always true. There is no indication that Winston will ever go back to betraying Big Brother.

Polygamist
1. This is a sub-culture because they fit into the broad cultures of Christian, white, and Americans, but inside that they live a different lifesyle with their marriges.
2. No, in the video the woman specifically states that they don't wish to change everyone, it depends on who you are and what you feel inside of you.
3. There can sometimes be jelousy, but they believe that it is the best thing for them to do. These ideas can often conflict because you feel two things inside of you. On the other hand, you can feel special and people that don't act this way are below you
4. External- between the law and ploygamists. They could get sent to jail becuase it is un-lawful.

Love Language
1. I assumed the girl was shy by the way she didn't talk to the guy and looked away from him. I also assumed the man was in love at first sight by the way he looked up in the sky and the look on his face/.
2. Yes, hearing is a culture because there are certain expectations that people that can hear have. For people that hear when they talk to someone they expect an answer, but deaf people can't hear so they can't respond.
3. external- the man and the girl can't communicate by talking even though they both wan't to.
4. internal- the man wanted to make a move on the girl but was worried of what the response would because she is seemingly unintrested by the way her headphones are in and she seems to be ignoring him.
5. The conflicts were resolved by writing to each other and at the end the girl revealing that she is deaf. This explained that she was somehow embarrased by her disability and by no means trying to ignore him.
