First 1984 reading journal

Equality and conformity in the book 1984 had been established by drastic measures through the 'party' and 'thought police'. The party used slogans to try to get people to behave 24/7 like the big face of big brother with the words 'Big Brother is Watching You' that is put up every where as written on page 5. Also the Slogans 'War is Peace   Freedom is Slavery   Ignorance is Strength' tries to get people to stop thinking for themselves and be the same. The thought police is another drastic measure that was taken to create equality and conformity. Basically, if you had threatening thoughts you were put to death, so by killing the threats, a world of seemingly equal and same people is created.

Conflict was also reduced and tried to have been destroyed in this society. Religion is barely talked about and it is obvious nobody has a faith in a religion. Relationships, as well are not allowed to be intimate. You are not allowed to be attracted physically to your mate and sex is only to reproduce, not out of love. Relationships are not natural, they are forced and not fun. Individual rights have also been taken away, everything is controlled and you cannot choose anything in life. Everyone has the same rations of food, clothes, etc.. People are forced to seem like they're happy because they can't see the other side of the situation.

This society is clearly a dystopia because although a utopian society was in mind when the party made this society, it simply is not possible. Even though people seem happy, they really aren't because it is forced and fake. Everyone has to try not to stick out and must strive to please the party and pretend to be happy.
